Chinoiserie style, with its delicate patterns, vibrant colors, and timeless elegance, is a perfect way to elevate your fall décor this year—and the best part is, you can easily DIY it by decoupaging ceramic pumpkins or Vases.
One of the best parts about creating DIY Chinoiserie pumpkins is how budget-friendly the project can be. If you like thrifting, you can find holiday decor and vases ripe for the using. You don’t need to shop at specialty stores—many of the items can also be found at discount retailers, dollar stores, or even in the clearance aisle of your favorite craft shop.
The picture on the above are items I found at Dollar Tree.
Ceramic or faux pumpkins are often available for just a few dollars, and decorative napkins or scrapbook paper with floral or toile patterns can usually be picked up in multi-packs at a bargain price. Add a bottle of Mod Podge, which stretches far for multiple projects, and you’ve got everything you need for a chic, custom look without spending much. It’s a creative way to get that timeless, elegant Chinoiserie aesthetic on a shoestring budget. Clear vases may need to be painted first, you can use your preferred acrylic paint, but I have found spray paint to work best.
I have listed my favorite finds and links to get them in the Shopping list at the end of the blog. I am an affiliate for some and get a small piece of the pie, so thank you. But most are just my favorite finds and where I got them.
But first, what exactly is Chinoiserie? Originating in 17th- and 18th-century Europe, Chinoiserie is an artistic style inspired by East Asian design. It often features intricate blue-and-white patterns, birds, florals, pagodas, and other fanciful motifs. The look is both classic and whimsical, bringing a sense of refined elegance to interiors and decorative pieces.

To bring this timeless style into your fall décor, start by gathering your ceramic pumpkins, gourds and vases in varying sizes you sourced on you shopping adventure; white or neutral ones work best as a base. Next, choose decorative napkins, tissue paper, or Chinoiserie-inspired scrapbook paper featuring classic motifs such as florals, birds, or pagodas. Carefully cut out or tear your chosen patterns, separating the thin top layer if using napkins. Using a decoupage medium like Mod Podge, brush a thin coat onto the pumpkin, place your paper piece down, and gently smooth it with your fingers or a small brush to avoid wrinkles. Continue layering the designs until the pumpkin is covered to your liking, then apply another coat of Mod Podge over the top to seal it with a glossy finish.
Once dry, you’ll have a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind pumpkin that brings a sophisticated yet whimsical touch to your autumn display. Cluster them on a mantel, use them as a dining table centerpiece, or mix them in with traditional fall décor for a chic, unexpected twist that feels both seasonal and stylish. This simple project blends the charm of Chinoiserie with the coziness of fall, giving your home an elegant seasonal refresh.
You can Incorporate colorful Chinoiserie into your Fall Decor with designs that fit your unique style. Here are just a few.
🎨 1. Multicolor Motifs for a Vibrant Look
Inspiration: The Etsy gourds with butterflies, florals, and greenery in peach, pink, and gold accents.
DIY Tip: Look for Chinoiserie floral napkins or scrapbook papers with warm hues (coral, blush, peach) and botanical motifs.
Technique: Layer flowers and leaves in clusters around the pumpkin, leaving some negative space for a porcelain-like effect. You can also highlight details with a touch of metallic gold paint.
💙 2. Classic Blue & White Elegance
Inspiration: The timeless cobalt blue-on-white designs with pagodas, birds, and vines.
DIY Tip: Napkins with Delft blue or chinoiserie toile patterns work perfectly. Many dinner napkins or paper cocktail napkins feature this design.
Technique: Cut out larger scenic motifs (pagodas, trees) for the center of your pumpkin, then fill in with vines or small florals around the sides for balance.
🌿 3. Modern Monochrome Twist
Inspiration: White pumpkins with one bold color—like cobalt blue or jade green patterns.
DIY Tip: Choose napkins or tissue paper with a single dominant color (navy, emerald, or even red for a festive twist).
Technique: Cover the pumpkin in one strong pattern for a contemporary but elegant statement piece.
🍂 4. Autumn-Inspired Palette
Inspiration: Warmed-up Chinoiserie to suit fall—soft oranges, rust, burgundy, and gold.
DIY Tip: Look for napkins with harvest florals that still have that ornate chinoiserie detail—think chrysanthemums, peonies, or vines in autumn tones.
Technique: Pair these motifs with a cream or ivory ceramic pumpkin, then add a metallic gold-painted stem for an elegant seasonal finish.
