A Winter Gift: Crafting Birdseed Ornaments for Wildlife

As winter sets in and the world outside turns into a chilly wonderland, many of us turn our thoughts to the wildlife that braves the cold. One delightful way to support our feathered friends is by creating birdseed ornaments. These charming treats are not only a great source of food for birds during the lean winter months, but they also add a whimsical, decorative touch to your outdoor space. Plus, they’re an excellent craft project for all ages, combining creativity with a touch of nature.

Why Make Birdseed Ornaments?

During the winter, natural food sources for birds can be scarce. Seeds, berries, and insects may be buried under snow or depleted by the end of autumn. Birdseed ornaments provide an energy-rich snack to help birds maintain their strength and stay warm. Watching birds enjoy your homemade treats can also bring joy and a sense of connection to the natural world during the colder months.

Most importantly have fun with it, you can even create a theme for your ornaments. Mine turned into Alice in Wonderland, can you tell?

Ingredients and Supplies

To make your own birdseed ornaments, you'll need the following:

  • 3/4 cup of flour

  • 1/2 cup of water

  • 3 tablespoons of corn syrup

  • 1 packet of unflavored gelatin

  • 4 cups of birdseed

  • Cookie cutters (metal ones work best)

  • Drinking straws (cut into small pieces)

  • Parchment paper

  • String or twine

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Workspace: Lay out a sheet of parchment paper on a flat surface. This will be your workstation where you assemble the ornaments.

  2. Mix the Binding Agent: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, water, corn syrup, and gelatin. Stir until the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened.

  3. Add the Birdseed: Gradually fold in the birdseed, mixing until all the seeds are coated with the binding mixture.

  4. Shape the Ornaments: Place your cookie cutters on the parchment paper. Spoon the birdseed mixture into the cutters, pressing it down firmly to ensure it’s compact.

  5. Create a Hanging Hole: Insert a small piece of straw into the top of each ornament. This will create a hole for threading the string later.

  6. Let Them Dry: Leave the ornaments to dry for at least 24 hours. Flip them once halfway through drying to ensure even drying on both sides.

  7. Remove the Straw and Add String: Once the ornaments are completely dry and firm, gently remove the cookie cutters and straws. Thread a piece of string or twine through the hole and tie it securely.

  8. Hang Your Ornaments: Choose sturdy branches in your yard and hang the ornaments where birds can easily access them but are safe from predators.

Tips for Success

  • Use a variety of birdseed to attract different bird species. Black oil sunflower seeds, millet, and cracked corn are all excellent choices.

  • Avoid placing ornaments in areas where they might get wet, as moisture can cause them to disintegrate. This may be hard during winter, but the birds will eat them quickly so not to worry.

  • Make sure to hang them where the birds will have a place to perch while eating, otherwise they may ignore them.

  • Squirrels may also show up for these delicious treats, but I have found all creatures big and small get a chance to enjoy.

Enjoy the Show

Once your birdseed ornaments are in place, sit back and watch as birds flock to your yard to enjoy their winter feast. It’s a rewarding experience that not only helps wildlife but also adds beauty and activity to your outdoor space. Happy crafting!
